A couple of months ago now I wrote a blog post on the subject of ‘Being a tester outside of the workplace’ and I suppose you could consider this a continuation of that post. All the examples I gave before were things that I found away from a computer, this was perhaps a little misleading because the hypersensitivity to bugs is not just out there in the real world but also towards other software I use as a part of my every day work.
I remember a bug in the early versions of Microsoft Test Manager which wouldn’t let you alter or a value for a parameter and any attempt to do this would result in a crash to desktop. Yeah there is some sort of irony involved in there being bugs in a piece of software that will be used almost exclusively by testers for a software development company.
The most recent bug like this I found was in my TweetDeck Desktop client.
The first step in recreating this bug is to open up a YouTube video link so that it opens embedded within TweetDeck.
The next step is to open a bit.ly when it appears as a notification.
This will pop up the link behind your YouTube video and because it’s smaller than the YouTube window you can’t actually see it appear. As a result this locks up TweetDeck because you cant close the youtube video; a restart of the programme is required for continued use.

I quite enjoying finding little bugs in software like this so expect more posts like this in the future.
